Hone was a prominent character on the London radical scene during the late Regency he was not only acknowledged as a personality who was deeply committed to several social and political causes but also as the man who fervently served the cause of the free press in the 1810s. ![]() ![]() His essay takes its cue from Kyle Grimes’s article “ Spreading the Radical Word,” which demonstrates the long-lasting impact of William Hone’s liturgical parodies for which he was tried in 1817, and in which Grimes discusses the existence of an “ under-ground distribution system” that facilitated the circulation of those parodies (Grimes 1998, 149).
